What Does ‘Shifting Loads’ Mean?

One of easiest ways to capitalise on your solar system is to shift as much load from night to day. For residential systems, little things like using the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and ironing during the day means more solar electricity that your system generates is used. This offsets electricity you would have had to buy from the grid at say 35cents/kWh rather than exporting that unused solar electricity for around 10cents/kWh.

These subtle differences all add up and the same applies for commercial applications. Auditing your commercial operation allows you to identify loads that can be better matched with your solar electricity generation profile and this should be done regularly as the savings can be substantial. Load shifting can be a very worthwhile exercise when your power bill is large, as moving completely away from Peak power times is an easy win for you.
